New to Boomfest: Free Sweet Corn Festival Saturday downtown
FREE Sweet Corn will be served in front of Michael & Dowd and Clingman Pharmacy from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24! Be sure to bring the family for the entire day and stay for the sweet corn. We only have 2,000 ears of corn so come early!
(A free will donation for the sweet corn festival will be taken)
Straitrun -- formerly the Schmidt Family Band -- will perform during this part of the Boomfest event.
Vinton Women's Club plans annual Teachers Reception, Aug. 28
The vinton Womens Club, will host a Teachers Reception.
Wednesday August 28, 2013 from 3:30 P.m to 5:00 P.M.
at the Ray House in Vinton located at 912 1st Ave.
All Teachers & Public are invited to attend.
Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day Camp Planned
A farm safety day camp for any Benton County student in 4th, 5th and 6th grade is being planned for Saturday, September 21, 2013. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Vinton. The Benton County Extension Service in conjunction with Progressive Agriculture, Benton County Farm Bureau, Vinton-Shellsburg FFA, Benton Community FFA, Vinton Family Practice, Virginia Gay Hospital and county beef, pork and dairy commodity groups are sponsoring the event.
Viking Blowout set for Friday; to include volleyball scrimmage this year
With the new school year comes the excitement of another fall sports season. Come out Friday night for the annual Fall Sports Blowout and get a sneak preview of our volleyball and football teams. As an additional feature this year we have added a volleyball scrimmage in the high school gym prior to heading to the football field for the remaining events.
Flea Market September 6 & 7, during IFA convention
There will be a Flea Market September 6 & 7, 2013 at 1002 E. 10th Street, Vinton, IA 52349 from 9-4 each day.
The site is an open field, with no electricity.
The Iowa Firemen's Convention will be in town that weekend with an estimated 2,500 to 3,500 people in town. They will be camping across the street from the site.

Annual VS Special Olympics Benefit Ride set for Aug. 24
Vroom! comes before Boom! Saturday, August 24th as the 4th Annual Vinton Shellsburg United Special Olympics Benefit ride rolls into town. Starting at the Ron da Voo and covering approximately 130 miles, the ride raises money to support local Special Olympics athletes from Vinton-Shellsburg, CPU and Benton Community school districts. “We’re expecting nearly 200 riders, and all vehicles are welcome to join the ride,” event organizer Kris Kramer said. Kiwanis again plan 'Bring the Noise' 5K event; set for Aug. 24
Vinton Noon Kiwanis is pleased to partner with Vinton Unlimited and Boomfest to host the third annual "Bring the Noise 5K Walk/Run."
The event takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, during the annual Boomtown/Boomfest weekend in Vinton.
The route is pleasant, stroller- and dog-friendly with a nice downhill stretch at mile #2 to propel you the rest of the way to the finish! New direction and route markers make the path easy to follow.
EASTERN IOWA HONOR FLIGHT ORIENTATION AND FLIGHT SCHEDULE
The next Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will depart from Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, September 10th, 2013.
This flight will again be a mix of World War II and Korean Veterans.
They are scheduled to take off at 7:00 AM, and return at approximately 10:30-10:45 PM the same date.
This flight is sponsored by the employees of Pepsico / Quaker in Cedar Rapids.
Pool in final week; Doggie Dip set for Aug. 18
The Vinton Community Swimming pool is now in its final week so be sure to stop by to take one last dip before the summer comes to an end. We will be on our regular pool hour schedule all the way through Saturday, August 17th.
On Sunday, August 18th, the pool will be hosting its annual Doggie Dip from 1 PM - 4 PM to conclude the pool season.
IFA Craft Show set for Sept. 7 during Iowa Firefighter's Convention
The Annual Iowa Firefighter's convention will be held this year at the Vinton Fire Station. Over 20 crafters from across the state! Items include Yard art, crocheted items, children's boutique items, American Girl Doll clothes, candles, lotions, Honey, jewelry, wood working, metal art and MORE! Open to the public with NO DOOR CHARGE!!
